Ajinkya Rahane to Lead Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2025 After Shreyas Iyer’s Big Move

Ajinkya Rahane is reportedly set to take on the captaincy of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for the upcoming 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

After being released by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, Rahane was picked by KKR for his base price of ₹1.5 crore.

The veteran Indian batter is expected to replace Shreyas Iyer, who was bought by Punjab Kings for a record ₹26.75 crore, in a significant leadership shift for KKR.

The Leadership Change at KKR

KKR finds itself at the threshold of a new era following the departure of Shreyas Iyer, their skipper in the last season. With no official announcement yet, sources indicate Rahane is almost certain to lead the team.

“Yes, at the moment, it’s 90% confirmed that Ajinkya will be the new KKR captain. He was bought specifically to be a viable captaincy option,” a source told The Times of India.

Earlier, there was speculation about Venkatesh Iyer, purchased for ₹23.75 crore, or Rinku Singh, retained for ₹13 crore, taking on the captaincy. However, KKR appears to have chosen Rahane’s seasoned leadership over the younger contenders.

Rahane’s Journey as a Leader

Rahane’s leadership credentials are well-established. He captained the Rajasthan Royals and Rising Pune Supergiants between 2017 and 2019, leading in 25 IPL matches with nine wins.

Though his record includes 16 losses, his experience navigating the pressure-filled tournament is invaluable.

In domestic cricket, Rahane’s captaincy reached a peak when he led Mumbai to their 42nd Ranji Trophy title in the 2023-24 season.

His leadership also shone during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy when he captained a depleted Indian side to a historic series victory against Australia.

This blend of IPL and domestic cricket leadership experience positions Rahane as an ideal choice to guide KKR in a highly competitive IPL season.

Stellar IPL Career

Rahane’s IPL career spans 185 matches, with 4,642 runs at an average of 30.14. His batting achievements include two centuries and 30 half-centuries, all at a strike rate of 123.42.

His time with CSK in IPL 2023 was particularly noteworthy, as he surprised critics with his aggressive batting style, reinforcing his ability to adapt and remain relevant in the fast-paced T20 format.

Beyond his batting, Rahane’s calm demeanor and tactical acumen on the field are qualities that make him an asset as a leader.

KKR’s Bold Move

Rahane’s selection for captaincy comes amid significant changes within KKR. The franchise’s management has focused on building a balanced squad, blending youth and experience.

Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh, key players for KKR, will now have the opportunity to play under Rahane’s experienced leadership.

The decision to bring Rahane on board also underscores KKR’s confidence in his ability to guide the team through challenging situations and extract the best from their diverse lineup.

Shreyas Iyer’s Transition

Shreyas Iyer’s departure marked a pivotal moment for KKR. After leading the team in the previous season, Iyer was bought by Punjab Kings for ₹26.75 crore during the mega auction.

Meanwhile, he replaced Rahane as Mumbai’s captain for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024, further adding to the leadership shuffle.

Rahane’s appointment signifies a fresh start for KKR, aiming to consolidate their position as one of the most successful IPL franchises.

The Road Ahead

If Rahane’s captaincy is confirmed, it will add a new chapter to his illustrious career and bring renewed energy to KKR. The veteran batter’s ability to inspire confidence, combined with his leadership expertise, could be the catalyst for KKR’s resurgence in IPL 2025.

As the three-time IPL champions prepare for the upcoming season, Rahane’s leadership offers a steady hand at the helm, capable of guiding a team that blends youthful dynamism and seasoned talent.
