Anushka Sharma, who was born into an army family, took a U-turn when she first walked the runway as a model in 2007 and made her silver screen debut in Aditya Chopra’s ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ in 2008. Anushka has established herself as an independent actor and conscientious producer since then. She has acted in films like ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’, ‘PK’, ‘Sultan’, and ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’, making her one of India’s best actresses. Anushka Sharma co-produced NH10 with her brother Karnesh Sharma in 2015, through her production firm, Clean Slate Films.

Aside from performing, Anushka is a supporter of various issues, including the ‘Right to Education’ for children, the gender pay gap, and animal rights.

Anushka Sharma was born in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, on May 1, 1988. Colonel Ajay Kumar Sharma, Anushka’s father, is a retired army officer, and Ashima Sharma, her mother, is a housewife. Anushka spent her early years at Sheela Bhawan, which is located on Naishvilla Road, Dehradun.

Anushka was born in Bangalore, although she had her primary education at St. Mary’s School in Assam. Sakshi Dhoni, M.S. Dhoni’s wife, was a classmate of Anushka’s at the time. Anushka completed her schooling at the Army School in Bangalore. Anushka earned her bachelor’s degree in arts from Mount Carmel College in Bangalore.

Anushka moved to Mumbai after graduation to pursue her modeling career. Prasad Bidapa, a style consultant, helped her get signed with Elite Model Management. Anushka made her runway debut in 2007 at Lakme Fashion Week with designer Wendell Rodricks’ Les Vamps Show. Anushka was also chosen as a final model for the Spring Summer 2007 Collection. Anushka Sharma began her acting career in 2008, co-starring with Shah Rukh Khan in the film ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’. The film was a commercial success, becoming the second highest-grossing Hindi film of the year, and it earned her nominations for Best Lead Actress and Best Female Debut at the Filmfare Awards. Anushka completed her three-film pact with Yash Raj Films in 2010 with the romantic comedy ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’, produced by Maneesh Sharma and co-starring newcomer Ranveer Singh. The ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ garnered her positive praise and went on to become a surprise success. Critics praised Anushka’s performance, with many calling it her best to date.

‘Patiala House’(2011) directed by Nikkhil Advani and co-starring Akshay Kumar, was her first picture, which was not released by Yash Raj Films. Anushka worked with Ranveer Singh and filmmaker Maneesh Sharma in the comedy-drama ‘Ladies versus Ricky Bahl the following year. In 2012, Anushka played a supporting role in Yash Chopra’s romantic comedy ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif, marking her sixth Yash Raj Films commitment and her second with SRK. For her remarkable performance, Anushka was named Best Supporting Actress. ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ was the year’s third highest-grossing Bollywood film. Anushka then acted in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haryana-set political satire ‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’.

Further, Anushka plays the role of a television journalist who meets an extra-terrestrial played by Aamir Khan in Rajkumar Hirani’s religious comedy ‘PK’. ‘PK’ became Bollywood’s highest-grossing film, grossing over $7 billion globally. Clean Slate Films is co-founded by Anushka Sharma.

Clean Slate Film’s debut feature was Navdeep Singh’s drama ‘NH10’(2015), in which she also starred. Anushka portrayed jazz singer Rosie Noronha in Anurag Kashyap’s historical murder thriller ‘Bombay Velvet’(2015), which was inspired by Gyan Prakash’s novel Mumbai Fables. However, the film’s budget of 1.2 billion dollars was not met. That same year, Anushka starred as a cruise ship dancer in Zoya Akhtar’s ensemble comedy-drama Dil Dhadakne Do.

In recognition of Anushka’s performances in “NH10” and “Dil Dhadakne Do”, Anushka received nominations for the Filmfare Awards for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. ‘Sultan’(2016), a romantic sports drama written and directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, reintroduced Anushka to Yash Raj Films. She portrayed Aarfa Hussain, a Haryana wrestler who inspires the main character (Salman Khan) to take up the sport. Anushka trained in the sport for six weeks, learning the Haryanvi dialect and socializing with other female wrestlers from around the state. Sultan is one of the highest-grossing films in Indian cinema, collecting approximately $5 billion worldwide.

Later that year, Anushka reprised her role as Alizeh Khan in Karan Johar’s love drama ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil,’ portraying a free-spirited girl trapped in a loveless relationship. Anushka was named the most popular Bollywood actress of 2016 by Bollywood Hungama.

Anushka became a vegetarian in 2015. She was named “Bollywood’s sexiest vegetarian celebrity” by the Times of India.

Anushka is a supporter of several charity initiatives. She walked the ramp in support of ‘Shabana Azmi’s Mijwan Welfare Society’, a non-profit organization that empowers women. As part of NDTV’s “Our Girls, Our Pride” project, she committed to aiding the education of India’s young females in 2013. Anushka participated in a commercial for the National Film Development Corporation of India in the same year, alongside other celebrities, to raise awareness about children’s “Right to Education.”

Anushka Sharma auctioned off her ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ leather jacket on eBay in December 2014, with the proceeds assisting flood-ravaged Kashmir and Assam. In April 2015, she was also the face of a fundraising campaign for Nepal disaster victims.
