Reshuffling of Congress Working Committee (CWC) on 79th Birth Anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi
The Indian National Congress (INC) announced a new Congress Working Committee (CWC) by reshuffling its members on 20th August 2023, which is also the 79th birth anniversary of former Indian Prime Minister (PM) Rajiv Gandhi.
In a significant reshuffle of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the apex decision-making body of the Indian National Congress, party leaders Sachin Pilot and Shashi Tharoor have been included. Led by Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge, this reshuffle carries both strategic and political implications.
Significance of CWC
The Congress Working Committee serves as the executive power within the Congress party, possessing the ultimate decision-making authority regarding the party’s constitution, policies, and actions. As an institution with a 138-year history, the CWC holds immense significance in guiding the party’s trajectory.
Shashi Tharoor’s Response
Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed his gratitude for being nominated to the CWC. In a statement posted on social media platform “X”, he acknowledged the historic role played by the CWC in steering the party over the years. Tharoor’s inclusion underscores his growing influence within the party.
“As one who is aware of the historic role played by the CWC in guiding the party over the last 138 years, I am humbled and grateful to be part of this institution,” he added.
He said that he was humbled and grateful to be part of this institution, and looked forward to the opportunity to serve the party alongside his dedicated colleagues.
Sachin Pilot’s Entry
The induction of Sachin Pilot into the CWC assumes particular importance. It comes ahead of the Rajasthan Assembly elections and aims to mitigate tensions between him and the Rajasthan Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot. Since Congress came to power in Rajasthan in 2018, Pilot and Gehlot have been embroiled in a power struggle.
Turbulent Relations: Pilot vs. Gehlot
The internal strife within the Rajasthan Congress has been a persistent issue. Sachin Pilot, as Deputy Chief Minister, led a rebellion against Ashok Gehlot’s administration in 2020, resulting in his removal from office. However, in a recent turn of events, Pilot declared his intentions to reconcile with Gehlot, forming a united front for the upcoming Rajasthan polls. This move followed advice from Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge.
A Significant Inclusion: Shashi Tharoor
Shashi Tharoor’s inclusion in the CWC is noteworthy. He was one of the leaders who, in 2020, was part of the group of 23 that raised questions about the party’s leadership under Sonia Gandhi. His presence in the CWC signals a broadening of the party’s decision-making base and reflects an effort to integrate dissenting voices within the party structure.
Other Key Appointments in CWC
The reconstituted CWC comprises 39 members, including prominent figures like Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Sachin Pilot, and Shashi Tharoor. Former Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Charanjit Singh Channi, Chhattisgarh Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu, and Pratibha Singh are among the other key inclusions in this influential panel.
End of the Steering Committee
The formation of the new CWC marks the conclusion of the Steering Committee, which had been established as a temporary measure. This move underscores Congress’ intent to strengthen its top leadership and consolidate decision-making under the guidance of Mallikarjun Kharge, who assumed the party’s presidency in October last year.
The reshuffle in the CWC holds substantial political implications. Sachin Pilot’s inclusion is a calculated move aimed at resolving internal conflicts ahead of the Rajasthan Assembly elections. Moreover, the reshuffed CWC reflects the party’s keen attention to the upcoming Assembly elections in the heartland. Chhattisgarh Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu, an influential OBC leader, has been included in the new CWC and is expected to play a crucial role.
Shashi Tharoor’s appointment signals the party’s willingness to accommodate diverse voices and opinions. As these changes take effect, the Congress party aims to present a united front and reinvigorate its political presence on the national stage.
