Internal Rift in Karnataka Congress: MLA Urges CM to Cancel Election Guarantees, Faces Backlash
Karnataka Congress MLA HR Gaviyappa has stirred controversy by suggesting that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah cancel some of the government’s election guarantee schemes due to financial constraints.
Speaking at a public event, the MLA from Vijayanagara claimed that these schemes were making it difficult to fund housing projects for the underprivileged.
“It has become difficult to provide houses to people due to guarantee schemes. I request the Chief Minister to cancel 2-3 guarantee schemes that are not needed; then at least we will be able to provide houses. The decision has been left to the chief minister. We will stand by his decision,” Mr. Gaviyappa remarked.
He further elaborated, “This year, ₹40,000 crore has been arranged from somewhere and whatever is possible is being done. The chief minister is doing the work keeping development in mind. We all should support him.”
This statement, caught on video, has put the Congress-led state government in an awkward position, drawing criticism from party leaders.
DK Shivakumar’s Response and Rebuttal
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar quickly dismissed Gaviyappa’s claims and reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to its election promises.
Speaking to reporters, Shivakumar said, “There is no question of stopping any guarantee. We are committed to the people of Karnataka; we will implement it, and no one can raise their voice against it.”
He also announced disciplinary action against the MLA, stating, “I am going to issue him a show-cause notice. He cannot do this. We have given a word to the people of the state on the guarantees, and we will stand by it at any cost. No MLA of the Congress party should question the guarantee schemes, and we will take action if anyone does so.”
Internal Disputes Surface
This incident is not the first time Gaviyappa has raised concerns about government policies. Previously, he alleged funding discrimination against his constituency, a claim denied by the district Congress chief, Siraj Sheikh, who accused Gaviyappa of being inactive and linked his associates to the RSS.
Gaviyappa’s remarks have fueled speculation about internal disagreements within the Karnataka Congress. However, Shivakumar has emphasized the party’s unity and commitment to fulfilling its promises to the electorate.
Karnataka’s Financial Priorities
The MLA’s comments highlight the financial challenges faced by the state government in balancing development projects and welfare schemes.
According to Gaviyappa, the implementation of certain guarantee schemes, including free travel and other benefits, has strained resources, affecting housing initiatives.
Shivakumar, however, assured that the government’s financial strategies are sound and that all promises will be upheld. He noted, “We have made commitments to the people, and we are determined to keep them. Development and welfare go hand in hand.”
Broader Context: Political and Developmental Goals
While addressing the issue, Shivakumar also touched upon broader political and developmental priorities. He mentioned his upcoming visit to Delhi to discuss the Mahadayi project with Union ministers and participate in the swearing-in ceremony of Jharkhand Chief Minister-designate Hemant Soren.
He also highlighted the Congress’ plans to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) convention in Belagavi.
On the Mahadayi project, Shivakumar expressed optimism about central government approval. “Very happy if he [Union Minister Pralhad Joshi] can get the approval for Mahadayi. Former PM Deve Gowda also said that he would get approval for the Mekedatu project,” he said.
When asked about a potential cabinet reshuffle, Shivakumar deflected, stating, “I don’t know about it. I will talk about it when I get some info. You should ask this question to the Chief Minister and AICC General Secretary.”
Congress’ Firm Stand on Guarantees
Despite Gaviyappa’s comments, the Congress leadership remains firm on its election guarantees. “We have given a word to the people of the state on the guarantees, and we will stand by it at any cost,” Shivakumar emphasized.
The party’s strict response to Gaviyappa’s remarks underscores its resolve to maintain internal discipline and deliver on its commitments.
