Urvil Patel Smashes Record-Breaking 28-Ball Century in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Gujarat’s wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel, who went unsold during the IPL 2025 mega auction, made history in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024.

In a match against Tripura in Indore on November 27, Urvil struck the fastest T20 century by an Indian cricketer.

Urvil’s maiden T20 century came during Gujarat’s chase of a 156-run target. He scored an unbeaten 113 runs off just 35 balls, hitting seven fours and 12 sixes. His remarkable century came off just 28 balls. Gujarat sealed the win in just 10.2 overs.

Breaking Rishabh Pant’s Record

Opening the innings with Aarya Desai, Urvil amassed 100 runs solely from boundaries—28 from fours and 72 from sixes. This stunning performance broke Rishabh Pant’s record for the fastest T20 century by an Indian.

Pant had previously achieved the milestone with a 32-ball century in the 2018 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Himachal Pradesh.

Globally, Urvil’s century ranks as the second-fastest in T20 cricket, behind Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan, who smashed a 27-ball century against Cyprus earlier this year.

Notably, Urvil was signed by Gujarat Titans for Rs 20 lakh in the IPL 2023 auction but was released before the 2024 auction. He went unsold at a base price of Rs 30 lakh during the IPL 2025 Mega Auction held in Saudi Arabia on November 24-25.

Consistent Performances and Domestic Record

Before this record-breaking innings, Urvil had played 43 T20 matches, scoring 875 runs at an average of 20.83 and a strike rate of 154.32, including four half-centuries with a top score of 96.

In first-class cricket, he had featured in six matches, scoring 158 runs with a highest score of 60 at an average of 14.36.

Urvil’s consistency was also evident in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on November 27, 2023, where he scored a 41-ball century against Arunachal Pradesh.

This effort marked the second-fastest List A century by an Indian, behind Yusuf Pathan’s 40-ball century. Exactly a year later, Urvil delivered his record-breaking 28-ball T20 century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Spectacular Shot Selection

Chasing Tripura’s 156-run target, Gujarat cruised to victory in 10.2 overs, largely due to Urvil’s unbeaten 113 off 35 balls. His innings included seven fours and 12 sixes.

Of his sixes, three went over the covers, three were hit straight down the ground, four cleared the midwicket region, and one sailed over square leg.

Urvil dismantled Tripura’s bowlers with ease. He scored 24 runs off just five balls bowled by Tripura captain Mandeep Singh.

Against Abhijit Sarkar, he scored 26 runs off nine balls, while Sankar Paul conceded 17 runs in four balls. Manisankar Murasingh was smashed for 28 runs in 10 balls, including one four and three sixes.

IPL and Global Comparisons

Despite his impressive performances, Urvil’s name in the uncapped wicketkeepers list went uncalled during the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. However, he answered his critics with this incredible display.

Urvil’s 28-ball century surpassed Indian cricketing icon Rishabh Pant’s 32-ball effort and came within a ball of matching the world record held by Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan.

This achievement also placed Urvil above legendary players like Chris Gayle, who scored a 30-ball century in IPL 2013. Urvil’s incredible strike rate of 322.86 in the match highlights his explosive batting ability.

Interestingly, this milestone came exactly a year after his 41-ball century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Urvil’s performance is a reminder of his talent and potential, despite being overlooked in the IPL.

Urvil Patel’s breathtaking century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy has etched his name in the record books. His innings showcased not just raw power but also a determination to prove his worth on the biggest stages.

Whether in domestic cricket or potentially in future IPL opportunities, Urvil Patel has shown he is a player to watch.
