Background :

Prithvi Shaw is an Indian international cricketer who represents the Indian cricket team in all formats, while also playing for Mumbai in domestic cricket and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. Prithvi Shaw made his debut for India at the age of 18 and holds the record for being the youngest debutant to score a test century. Prithvi Shaw was retained by Delhi Capitals for the Tata IPL Auction 2022 and captained the Indian team to victory in the 2018 Under-19 World Cup. As a right-handed opening batter, Prithvi Shaw made his first international appearance on 4 October 2018, becoming the second-youngest Indian after Sachin Tendulkar to achieve a Test century and the youngest Indian to do so on debut. Prithvi Shaw’s journey began with his first-class debut for Mumbai in the semi-finals of the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy, where Prithvi Shaw scored a century and earned the Man of the Match award. Prithvi Shaw hails from Thane, Maharashtra, in a Bihari family that had migrated to the city for employment. In 2013, Prithvi Shaw and his father were featured in the documentary film “Beyond All Boundaries,” which narrated their sports journey and was aired on National Geographic. Prithvi Shaw has received various sponsorships and endorsements, including a deal with Sanspareils Greenlands (SG). In February 2023, Prithvi Shaw was involved in an altercation at a nightclub, leading to vandalism and assault against him by Youtuber Sapna Gill and her male friends. Prithvi Shaw filed a police case, and Gill was subsequently arrested.

Career :

Prithvi Shaw played for the Middle Income Group (MIG) Cricket Club in Mumbai and served as the captain of Rizvi Springfield High School and the Mumbai under-16 team. Prithvi Shaw set a remarkable record in November 2013 by scoring 546 runs in a Harris Shield elite division match, the highest score by any batsman in any form of organised cricket since 1901. Prithvi Shaw led Rizvi Springfield to victory in the prestigious Harris Shield tournament in 2012 and 2013, scoring impressive centuries in the semi-final and final matches. During Prithvi Shaw’s cricketing journey, Prithvi Shaw trained and played for the Middle Income Group Cricket Club, where he had Sachin Tendulkar’s son, Arjun Tendulkar, as a teammate. Prithvi Shaw also made appearances for the local side High Lane Cricket Club. Prithvi Shaw showcased his skills in England by playing for the Cryptics Club against Middleton Stoney Cricket Club, where Prithvi Shaw scored a quick 68 and took three wickets for just one run. Prithvi Shaw received further opportunities to enhance his cricketing skills by accepting an invitation from the Julian Wood Cricket Academy in England in May 2013. Prithvi Shaw made his debut for Mumbai in List A cricket in the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy, and in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy, Prithvi Shaw continued his impressive form by scoring consecutive centuries in his first-class matches. Prithvi Shaw achieved his first List A century against Leicestershire in June 2018 and went on to score an unbeaten double-century (227* off 152) against Pondicherry in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in February 2021. Prithvi Shaw captained Mumbai in the 2020-21 Vijay Hazare Trophy and the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy, leading them to the final in both tournaments. Notably, Prithvi Shaw holds the distinction of being the only Indian cricketer with a 50+ average in First Class cricket, a 50+ average in List A cricket, and a 150+ strike rate in T20 cricket. Prithvi Shaw also achieved the highest score in Indian schools cricket at the time by scoring 546 runs in a Harris Shield match. Prithvi Shaw’s international career began in October 2018 when he made his Test debut against the West Indies, becoming the youngest Indian batsman to score a century on Test debut at the age of 18 years and 319 days. Prithvi Shaw has represented India in Tests, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Prithvi Shaw was named in India’s ODI and T20I squads for the series against Sri Lanka in June 2021 and made his T20I debut in July 2021.

IPL :

In the 2018 IPL auction, Prithvi Shaw was purchased by the Delhi Daredevils for ₹1.2 crores. At the age of 18 and 165 days, Prithvi Shaw became the youngest player to open the batting in the history of the Indian Premier League on 23 April 2018, representing Delhi Daredevils against Kings XI Punjab. Prithvi  Shaw made an impressive IPL debut, scoring 22 runs off 10 balls. On 27 April 2018, Prithvi Shaw achieved his first IPL fifty against the Kolkata Knight Riders, becoming the joint-youngest player to score an IPL fifty along with Sanju Samson (at 18 years and 169 days). Prithvi Shaw brilliant knock of 62 runs contributed to Delhi Daredevils’ comfortable 55-run victory over KKR. On 29 April 2021, Prithvi Shaw joined an elite club by hitting six boundaries in an over during an IPL match, emulating Ajinkya Rahane’s feat. Prithvi Shaw achieved this remarkable feat by smashing six boundaries off Shivam Mavi’s bowling in the first over of Delhi’s innings. Prithvi Shaw did not have a great season in IPL 2023.
