Background :

The Afghanistan national T20I team is captained by Rashid Khan Arman, an Afghan cricketer who was born on September 20, 1998. Rashid Khan participates in franchise leagues for the Gujarat Titans of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Adelaide Strikers of the Big Bash League (BBL) of Australia, Lahore Qalandars of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), and Band-e-Amir Dragons of the Shpageeza Cricket League of Afghanistan. Rashid Khan bats right-handed and bowls right-arm leg spin. In 1998, Rashid Khan was born in Nangarhar, in the east of Afghanistan. Rashid Khan has eleven siblings and is a native of Jalalabad. Rashid Khan’s family escaped the Afghan war when Rashid Khan was still a child, and they spent a few years living in Pakistan. After their eventual return to Afghanistan, they resumed their regular lives while Rashid Khan continued his education. Rashid Khan developed an admiration for South African batsman AB de Villiers as well as Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi while growing up and playing cricket with his brothers. In June 2018, Rashid Khan the cricketer participated in Afghanistan’s first Test match against India and had the most expensive bowling figures for a rookie. Rashid Khan became the youngest captain in cricket history at the age of 20 years and 350 days during a Test against Bangladesh in September 2019. Rashid Khan holds various records, such as being the youngest player to top the ICC Player Rankings for bowlers in ODIs and T20Is, and the fastest bowler to reach milestones like 100 ODI wickets and 50 T20I wickets.

Career :

Rashid Khan made his international debut for Afghanistan in October 2015 in an ODI against Zimbabwe, followed by his T20I debut against the same team in October of the same year. Rashid Khan achieved several records and milestones throughout his career, including taking a five-wicket haul in a T20I match against Ireland in March 2017, where Rashid Khan became the first player to accomplish this feat in just two overs. In June 2018, Rashid Khan participated in Afghanistan’s first-ever Test match against India. Rashid Khan achieved remarkable bowling statistics for an associate nation in an ODI in June 2017 and became the youngest player to top the ICC Player Rankings for bowlers in ODIs and T20Is in February 2018. Rashid Khan also became the top-ranked all-rounder after the 2018 Asia Cup. Rashid Khan broke records by being the youngest captain at the age of 19 years and 165 days and the fastest to reach 100 ODI wickets.  In April 2019, Rashid Khan was included in Afghanistan’s squad for the Cricket World Cup. Rashid Khan played his 100th international match during the tournament and bowled the most expensive spell in a World Cup match, conceding 110 runs against England. Rashid Khan was named the T20I captain of Afghanistan in April 2019 and was later appointed captain across all formats. However, in December 2019, the captaincy was given back to Asghar Afghan. In December 2020, he was honored as the ICC Men’s T20I Player of the Decade. Rashid Khan’s success has paved the way for other cricketers from similar backgrounds, such as Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane. Following the World Cup, Rashid Khan was appointed as the captain of the Afghanistan cricket team across all formats, leading the team to a victory against Bangladesh in his first Test match as captain. Despite being reappointed as captain, Rashid Khan relinquished the role after the selection committee failed to gain his consent for the T20 World Cup squad in September 2021. Rashid Khan achieved his 400th wicket in Twenty20 cricket during the tournament. In December 2022, Rashid Khan was once again named the captain of Afghanistan’s T20I team, succeeding Mohammad Nabi.

IPL :

In February 2017, Rashid Khan was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for ₹4 Crores to play in the 2017 Indian Premier League (IPL). Rashid Khan became one of the first Afghan players to be selected for the IPL. Rashid Khan made his IPL debut in the opening match of the 2017 tournament and took two wickets, helping his team secure a victory. Throughout the tournament, Rashid Khan emerged as the sixth-highest wicket-taker, claiming 17 wickets from 14 matches. In May 2018, during the 2018 IPL, Rashid Khan played his 100th Twenty20 match. Rashid Khan had a significant impact on the game, taking two wickets and affecting a runout, which earned him the Man of the Match award. In March 2022, Rashid Khan served as the vice-captain for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL.On 9 April 2023, during the 2023 IPL, Rashid Khan achieved a hat-trick against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Rashid Khan finished with figures of 3 for 37, becoming the fourth player in IPL history to accomplish this feat. Rashid Khan’s all-round performance helped Gujrat Titans reach the finals in IPL 2023.
